Things To Consider Before Starting A Blog in 2020

Blogging is fun; some people blog to share and express their thoughts, and while others earn money from it. There are some basics which one needs to understand and follow them to make their blogging career a  SUCCESS. Here I am going to share an ultimate guide on “Things to Consider Before Starting A Blog”.

Broadly, there are seven things you need to consider before you start blogging.

1. Select your Goal

The first thing to consider before starting a blog are your goals. Now, this might seem like a simple one, but it's so crucial by defining what your goals are for your blog. You can really set yourself up for success and know what success means for you. If you are a beginner and have random thoughts coming on topic, I suggest you grab a cup of coffee and just sit down with yourself and really brainstorm for your blog. Think about it, what you want to get out of it and where you see taking you long term.

Consider things like your time commitment, whether you wanted to do full-time or part-time. Also, do you have any plan to eventually monetize it in the future? Well, just take these things into consideration and get set yourself up for success.

2. Select your Niche

Niche is a topic you choose, on which you create content. This is a huge decision to make because it's going to determine the overall direction of your blog. When picking your niche, try to pick something that sustainable for you. Pick something on which you can continuously create content and something that people aren't going to lose interest in six months to a year. You want to just make sure that you chose a topic in which you have a passion. If you love what you're writing about, you're going to be more motivated to stick with it. So pick a niche of your interest, you give your all to it.

If you love pets, you can pick Pet Lovers, Pet Habbits, as your niche. Or if you love travelling then Travel blogs is something you definitely choose, here you can write about different places your visit, its culture, food, and experience you had for that matter.

3. A Good Domain Name

A domain name is the address of your site, and the selection of the right domain name is essential. Your domain name is your brand, it reflects what niche your blog refers to. There are many websites like GoDaddy, Namecheap from where you can purchase a domain. We recommend while buying a domain, not to go for any upselling options like buying an SSL Certificate and Email along with domain name. These products come free with some of the hostings you purchase later. So hold your decision till that time.

Here are some quick suggestions on "How to select a good domain name.

  • Keep it Short, Simple, and easy to remember – Do not go for a lengthy domain name, it’s not easy to pronounce and difficult to remember.
  • Use Keyword – It is advisable to have your niche keyword in the domain name, which helps you in SEO. For example, if your blog is on "Photography" or on "Camera," then www.mydslr.com can be a good option.
  • Don’t Use Numbers – Avoid using the numeric value in the domain name, it does not look good and also challenging to remember.
  • Use TLD Extension – Use a domain name with an extension like [.com] because it’s globally recognizable.

4. A Good Hosting Provider (Very Important)

Hosting is the backbone of your website, and choosing a good hosting is a tactical decision because good hosting means it good speed, uptime, security, and authority to your site. Like the hard drive of your computer, the website data, including blog data, content, images, pages, get store in hosting space.

There are hundreds of hosting providers, you can refer our article "Top 5 Web Hosting in 2020" to decide which hosting is best for you.

If you have multiple sites, then I would suggest going for SiteGround hosting. The other hostings you can consider are HostGator and A2 Hosting. I personally use SiteGround because of its features, and yes, it is recommended by WordPress too.

Why I like SiteGround?

I was using a cheap hosting plan for many years. When I checked my site performance on Pingdom. I realized that the load time for my site is significantly higher, and this is the reason why my website performance was so low compared to my competition.

I made the right decision to switch over to SiteGround, and now my blogging site is 80% faster than before. Since I am running multiple locations, so I bought the GrowBig plan from Site ground a switch all my sites this hosting. Another good thing about SiteGround is, it gives free SSL to all websites and "One-Click Installation" for WordPress, No Hassel at all!

5. Content Management System (CMS)

CMS is the soul of your website. It helps in designing the layout, add features, colors, and icons to your site. There are multiple platforms available to choose, and all of them are free to use. I personally recommend WordPress because it is a feature-rich and versatile platform. As a blogger, you need more flexibility, and WordPress provides you with many useful options and many plugins, unlike platforms like Wix or Squarespace, which comes with few pages and suitable for a static site.

WordPress CMS sometimes becomes fussy to use when you have some specific customization needed. There to help you, the majority of theme providers give their website builder tool, which complements WordPress. We will discuss this further in the below section.

6. Theme Selection and Functionality

Another vital aspect to consider before starting a blog is the functionality of your site. It is essential to know what do you want your website to be able to do and how much control do you want to have over at the customization?

For a blogging website, the design of the blog matters a lot. You may lose a lot of traffic if your theme selection is not correct, and your blog is not grabbing attention. There are multiple Free Themes available in WordPress, which you may consider.

I personally use "ShapeShift Theme" from Thrive Themes on all my websites. Thrive Themes gives a perfect Combination of Total Control, Stunning Design, & Rapid Site Building for word press sites, and with zero codings.

If you are purchasing premium things, these are some of the essential points to consider:

  • Firstly, your premium theme should be lightweight and easy to use.
  • Secondly, the theme should be fully compatible with the latest version of WordPress.
  • Thirdly, the theme should be Mobile Responsive, this is very important as 60%-70% of traffic comes from mobile users.
  • Finally, the theme provider should have 24x7 customer support available, this is very important.

Some Other Premium Themes (Personally Used)

Wp Astra:

One of the fastest-growing themes and trusted 8 lacs plus customers. Astra is a lightweight theme with stunning layouts, neat and clean header, and footer menus. You can design your homepage much more attractive and responsive by using elementor CMS with that.

Divi from Elegant Themes

This is one of the most popular themes which comes with tons of features staring from Drag & Drop building, True Visual Editing, inline text edit, to name a few. You can do N number of customizations a share your website page as you want it.

Rise by Thrive Themes

I was using Rise theme before switching to ShapeShift. Both the themes are from Thrive Themes, so there is less difference in the user interface. The newer theme comes with some advanced features to control necessary plugins and buttons directly on the page, which saves a lot of time and gives a real-time view of changes you are making to the site.

7. Added Value

Why should someone visit your blog as opposed to someone else's? When you determine what's unique, you bring to the table, this is when you can really market yourself as a blogger. For example, you want to use your blog to share the different recipes that you make. Then just selling yourself as a food blogger, get a little bit more specific, like what kinds of ingredients you use to make some specific dishes, go in micro-niche of the keyword you decide.

You have to determine a target specific audience, maybe you make super easy recipes to make that are great for busy moms. You engage more with your audience if you pick a micro and macro niche also, this is very important among things to consider when you starting a blog. Pick a blog topic in which you have in-depth knowledge.  Also, collect email ids of your audience, either by making them subscribe to you or giving freebies - in the form of e-books. So whenever you post a new blog, an alert goes to your readers.

Here again, I use "Thrive Leads," which comes in a bundle package of Thrive Membership. Do check all products you get in Thrive Membership by clicking here. All the products are must to have when you want to scale up.

8. Source of traffic

In the beginning, you're going to spend a lot of time designing your blog. and put effort to continuously create content. You want to make sure that you have a plan of how you're going to get it in front of your target audience. Therefore, it's so important to have a marketing plan for your blog from the beginning. You need to do SEO of your site to make it searchable organically, or maybe you're going to use social media to promote it. Spending money to advertise your article is not recommended here. Instead, I recommend focusing on your content, make it more engaging and exciting.
